Short Month, Big Impact: February Home To-Do Essentials

Although February is the shortest month of the year, it offers plenty of chances to refresh, organize, and maintain your home. With spring approaching, it’s an ideal time to address your home checklist tasks and create a cleaner, cozier, and more efficient living space.

Declutter: Go through your belongings and remove items you no longer need.

I do a deep declutter every three months. However, monthly decluttering can be easier than you think! I use the as-you-go method. Every time I clean my kitchen or bathroom I try to get rid of whatever I no longer need or use. I notice that things that are in the way of being productive are usually things I don’t need.

Check HVAC: Replace filters and schedule maintenance before spring.

Keeping your HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system clean is essential for maintaining efficiency and improving indoor air quality. Make sure to change air filters, clean vents and ducts, remove debris, and monitor/adjust humidity levels. Also, schedule professional maintenance once a year.

Inspect Windows: Check for drafts and seal any gaps.

Regularly inspecting your windows can help you catch problems early and maintain energy efficiency in your home! Here’s a step-by-step instructional video on how to effectively clean your windows.

Prep for Spring: Plan garden or outdoor projects for the upcoming season.

Some annual flowers that can be planted in California for some early spring color are Pansies, Snapdragons, ad California Poppies. Warm-season crops which can be started indoors in late February are Tomatoes and Peppers. By planting these crops and flowers in February and March, you can take advantage of the growing season and prepare for a vibrant garden later in the spring and summer! Review Emergency Kit: Ensure your supplies are stocked and up to date.

Residing in Northern California has made having several emergency kits a must. Wildfires and earthquakes are expected each year. and being ready keeps my mind at ease. Review your kit every six months to replace expired food, water, or medications. Adjust contents based on your family’s changing needs (e.g., adding baby supplies, or specific items for pets). Completing these tasks will help you stay organized and ready for spring!
